How it works

We're here to promote sustainable gardening. Ways in which we can design our garden more smartly, preserve water, encourage local habitats and provide sources of food.

Making Bayside more sustainable

From Brighton to Beaumaris there's loads of people who are either getting into gardening for the first time or who have years of experience up their (green) sleeves. We want these people to meet, share their experience (and spare tommies) and help Bayside become more sustainable.

There's lots to learn from each other

From organics and permaculture to hydroponics and keeping chooks. There's lots for us all to learn. No-ones an expert - we're hoping to learn together and have fun along the way.

When are meetings run?

We have a meeting every 3 or 4 weeks. They typically go for an hour or 2 depending on what we're doing. We also run working bees in peoples gardens on top of our normal meetings, so there's a number of ways to get involved (and you can invest as much time as you want).

Who's in charge?

No one! The meetings are for the people and run by the people. Got some ideas to present or problems you need help with? Bring them along to the group for discussion.

What happens at the meetings?

We're trying to include some of the following activities at each event:

  • A regular presentation each meeting on a particular topic (e.g. tell us your tips for growing a certain vegetable, show us something you've done in your garden, compost tips, how to setup a permaculture garden etc...)
  • Troubleshoot your garden woes - being attacked by aphids or preyed on by possums?
  • Swap your excess fruit, vegies, herbs, flowers and seeds
  • Borrow movies, books or tools
  • Working bees to help a group member with their garden
  • The world is our oyster (mushroom)....

There's lots of different people in the group with different interests and levels of experience. The group offers a great chance to get together with people who are learning like you, ask questions, share your knowledge and help create a sustainable Bayside.
